In 2009 Encounter Kaikoura formed a charitable trust and named it the Encounter Foundation. The objective of the Foundation is to support or initiate projects that primarily enhance the natural environment, both locally and further afield. The accumulated funds are donated to deserving projects as determined by the Foundation Trustees. By participating on the Dolphin Encounter tour, each and every customer is assisting in protecting our very special natural environment.
The Encounter Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to working toward supporting and/or initiating deserving projects deemed appropriate by the Trustees.
Our vision is to invest in and support the future wellbeing and sustainability of the local terrestrial and marine environment, for present and future generations, through tourism.
The purposes and aims of the Foundation are to devote or apply both capital and income of the Trust Fund to or for any charitable purposes which are from time to time selected by the Trustees and are valid charitable purposes. Without limiting this in any way, such purposes may also include the advancement of education and providing benefit to the community by:
(a) Initiating and supporting projects which have the purpose of enhancing, preserving or restoring the natural environment;
(b) Supporting other charitable organisations and agencies in activities such as tree planting, beautification projects and other such worthy causes for the benefit of the local community;
(c) Supporting initiatives, such as pest control, which encourage restoration of native flora and fauna;
(d) Maintaining and building walkways and tracks;
(e) Supporting restoration work around lakes and waterways; and
(f) Supporting other charitable organisations and agencies in activities and projects related to the marine environment.

South Bay Restoration Project This project is to re-establish an area of native forest on land owned by the New Zealand Presbyterian Church on the Kaikoura Peninsula, in Souh Bay Kaikoura. The area of 2.3 hectares is administered by St Paul's Church in Kaikoura. St Paul's Church have generously given the land and the end result should see pathways created, which will link up with existing walkways on the Peninsula. As the trees become established, quiet areas with seating might be created for people to enjoy the trees, the birdlife and the great views. The South Bay Restoration Project has been two years in the planning and with the succesful application to the Encounter Foundation for $10,000, the first stage of planting is to begin in April 2011. |
